Author: Jeff Richter

Jeff Richter is an award-winning, nationally published nature photographer, whose main goal in life is to be routinely as far away from a phone as possible.  Always an avid outdoorsman, his natural inclinations led him to work as a logger and a trapper.  In 1990, Jeff put the traps away, picked up a camera, and never looked back.

Mainly self-taught, he had his first image published in 1993 and subsequently has had hundreds of images appear in print.  The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Audubon, NorthWord Press, Willow Creek Press, Brown Trout, Wisconsin Trails magazine and Loonwatch are some of the publishers and environmental groups that have used Jeff’s photographs.

Jeff has won both national and regional awards, including a 2001 International Regional magazine Award for his photo essay on albino deer and two finalists in the 2002 British Gas/BBC International Photographer of the Year competition.

His first book, Seasons of the North, was an instant classic and is now in its fourth printing.  Now Jeff has published a second book, White Deer Ghosts of the Forest, featuring his photographs of the elusive and startling beautiful white or albino deer in the wild.

Perhaps no one has spent as much time following these ghosts of the forest as Jeff.  He has committed hundreds of images of the white deer to film over many years, and finally is sharing the best of them in this new book.  Award-winning outdoor writer and naturalist, John Bates, references historical accounts and tempers the subject with an explanation of the genetics of this phenomenon.

To this day Jeff remains as intrigued and excited by both the art and the artistry of photography and the natural world.
